Goldens and Children
Goldens are exceptional with children. They are gentle, protective and loving. They love to play and rough house but are patient and kind. A well trained golden is a joy to have as your child's best friend.
Active dogs
A golden needs daily exercise. A good walk or run is important to your animal's well being. Goldens tend to have a lot of energy and are active dogs, especially in puppy hood. They do not mentally mature until around two years of age so training is essential. Planning to spend time daily exercising your dog will make for a calm, well behaved pet.
Many goldens are used as service and therapy dogs, assisting handicapped persons in leading their lives. They are also used as search dogs in disasters and by canine units. Goldens excel in obedience, retrieving, tracking and agility. They are the breed whose only wish is to please their owners and be loved.
Goldens are not a noisy breed and often tend to bark only to alert you to company who they will greet with affection. They do not make good guard dogs as they love everyone.
Dog Health
Dog health is a serious issue. for many dogs, poor conditions, puppy mills, and simple neglect have meant that they will have debilitating or even life threatening illnesses such as hip dysplasia, slight loss and heart problems. All of McEwan's Gold dogs have been cleared for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, cardiac disorders, eye disorders and thyroid.
Looking For A Breeder
find a breeder through “word of mouth” or ask for references and a guarantee. Good breeders will supply you with a guarantee because we know that you are unlikely to have problems because of our good breeding practices. I offer a two year written guarantee because most of the problems I clear my breeding stock for will show up within that time frame. Try to meet the parents of the new puppy and registration papers. The environment the parents and the puppies are raised in will be important. The breeder will ask you questions. All puppies should be clean and well cared for with a bright and happy attitude. McEwan's Gold puppies are raised in my home so they are exposed to everyday noises, activities and people.
Choosing A Puppy
You need to determine if you want a pet or a working field dog or show dog, what sex you prefer and what personality you would like. Talk to the breeder about your interests, remember the breeder has watched the puppies personalities develop. buying a pupy is a big commitment in time as goldens live to be twelve to fifteen years old. My puppies are healthy, loving, beautiful and intelligent. Pet puppies are available at eight weeks old. I include a puppy package from Eukanuba dog food, guarantee, pedigree, registration, six weeks of insurance and a fact sheet to take home with your new best friend.
When your puppy is ready to be picked up he/she will have an implanted micro-chip, had first vaccination and been thorough health examined by a veterinarian and will have his/her health certificate and been wormed twice.
